The average estimate themselves by what they do, the above average by what they are.
Johann Friedrich von Schiller
Do you consider yourself average? By average, I mean wedged somewhere in the middle of the pack; not as well off as some, maybe a little better than others. Not the best, but not the worst either. Living an ordinary life where every day is just another average day, nothing really great but nothing all that bad.
By and large, the majority of folks see themselves as little more than average, just another average face in the crowd trying to find a way to squeeze by day in and day out. And by seeing themselves as ordinary and run of the mill, they fulfill their vision by living one average day after another. But whats the big deal? Theres nothing really all that bad about being average or is there?
The average person puts only 25% of his energy and ability into his work. The world takes off its hat to those who put in more than 50% of their capacity, and stands on its head for those few and far between souls who devote 100%.
While there are all sorts of connotations of what the word average means, it is generally assumed that when one says that something or someone is average, that individual is saying that something or someone is basically ordinary. Not extraordinary or outstanding in nature, but only ordinary. Not remarkable or spectacular in quality, but only ordinary. Hey, do you really want to live a life that can be best described as only ordinary? I didnt think so.
One thing about being average, it doesnt take much of anything to be positioned right in the middle of the pack. After all, a minimal effort will more than do the trick. And while underwhelming results are sure to turn few if any heads, chances are pretty good that nobody will really notice anyway. But for crying out loud, do you really want to slack your way through life, lazily plodding along and seeking the easy way out of everything? Not a chance!
The potential of the average person is like a huge ocean unsailed, a new continent unexplored, a world of possibilities waiting to be released and channeled toward some great good.
Have you ever felt that your life was nothing more than a so-so existence where unremarkable effort and equally not so special results have somehow become the name of the game? OK, now I will grant you that every one of us experiences a down in the dumps day on occasion. No doubt about it, life does have more than its fair share of ups and downs. But there is something definitely wrong with our lives the moment that ordinary, unexceptional and average describes the way we live.
It's time to fess up. Do you ever wish that you were doing a little better, maybe even a whole lot better? And do you find yourself slipping off into a glorious daydream where you vividly visualize yourself living the life youve always imagined, having a blast while having the time of your life? Well, if you can dream it, envision it and imagine it, why in the world shouldnt you be able to achieve your fondest dreams? You can, but that's going to require that you make your move; showing the courage to step away from the crowd and boldly blaze your own path to greatness.
Leadership is the challenge to be something more than average.
So how about it, are you ready to take that step right now? And if you are not ready now, when will you be? No, if youre ever going to make your move away from the mundane, the ordinary and the average way of thinking, acting and doing that has kept you cemented in place, you have to step forward and do it right this instance before you slip right back into that ordinary existence that bores you to tears. Come on, can you really afford to risk allowing this magical moment to fade away along with all of the hopes, dreams and aspirations you hold so close to your heart?
You should never concern yourself about whether youve got what it takes to make your life everything it can be and more. You have everything you need to step out of the shadows of mediocrity and into the life you are destined to live. There is something special smouldering deep down inside of you that urgently wants to get to the outside where the action is fast and furious and dive right into the fray. And that something is your need to succeed. Thats right; you have a NEED to thrive not barely survive. And inside you burns a NEED to do your very best not just fit in with all of the rest.
Advancement only comes with habitually doing more than you are asked.
Gary Ryan Blair
If you are prepared to do more than is expected and keep doing it, people will quickly sit up and take notice. And in a hurry! Why? For one very good reason; there are very few people nowadays willing to put forth the extra effort. And if you are ready to go the extra mile and keep going, youll soon stand out like the proverbial diamond in the rough. After all, the extra mile never has any traffic jams.
You were not placed on earth, blessed with all the talents and gifts you possess, to merely shrivel up and die on the vine. No, you were born to achieve and to far exceed lifes minimum daily requirements.
When you start consistently doing your very best every day, always doing whatever is needed whenever it is required, there will never again be anything remotely average about the life you live.
The Bottom Line: When you constantly give a better than average effort, doing more than others are willing to do, you can expect to consistently achieve far better results than the average person gets.
