Power Up Passages

In Need Of A Good Deed.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

January 15, 2004.

"Wherever there is a human being, there is a chance for a kindness."

Every one of us knows how excruciatingly uncomfortable life can become when the ball keeps bouncing the other way. Like it or not, we've all been down that old rough and tumble road before. At the very minute we begin thinking things couldn't get any worse, they do. Apparently out of luck and desperately short of hope, we begin feeling tired, discouraged and completely frazzled from head to toe, wondering how in the world we’ll ever turn things around.

Then, out of nowhere, someone comes along and shows us a little kindness. As if by magic, suddenly our mood and disposition takes a 180 degree turn for the better. Right then, when we really, really needed an instant infusion of something positive to pick up our spirits, an act of kindness managed to shine its way into our lives. Could anything possibly provide a bigger boost when we're feeling down and out than for someone to show that he or she cares?

“When you carry out acts of kindness you get a wonderful feeling inside. It is as though something inside your body responds and says, yes, this is how I ought to feel.”
Harold Kushner

If we enjoy being showered with kindness by those around us, which we definitely do, then doesn't it stand to reason that an act of kindness on our part just might be what the doctor ordered for someone else? You bet! By taking a moment or two to brighten someone’s day, you let them know that they do indeed count - and count for something truly special.

And better yet, by lightening someone else's load, you almost immediately experience an unparalleled feeling of contentment and fulfillment that words cannot fully express. Talk about a deal! Not only does the recipient of a caring act or kind word from you have their spirits lifted, seeing that person’s face light up like the Fourth of July really makes your day as well.

"You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

In the maddening rush that we get caught up in daily, it sometimes seems as if there simply is no time to step off the merry-go-round and share a caring minute with friends and strangers alike. But believe you me, there is always enough time available if you make the time - and take the time - to let others know you care.

After all, how much time does it take to say 'hello' or simply exchange smiles with someone else? And how hard can it be to lend a hand or pitch in and help someone who could use our assistance? Can there be a better feeling than giving a struggling individual a simple pat on the back or few words of encouragement when they really need it? Acts of kindness, big and small alike can work wonders - if you'll only allow them to do so. As Anne Frank said, "How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single minute before starting to improve the world."

"Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves."
James M. Barrie

Barbara De Angelis said, "Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them, and they bless you, the giver," and it's so true. You should seek to make a difference by sharing kindness and compassion with everyone you are privileged to meet and touch. You'll discover that making just one person’s life a little better can literally make your day.

Anytime and anywhere you find yourself feeling a little low, why not twist things around by perking up someone else's state of mind? Not only will they feel a whole lot better, but so will you. You will find that a caring and sharing act is oftentimes its own reward.

Aesop had this to say about good deeds: "No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted." So please, do not allow another day to slip through your fingertips without helping others become everything they are capable of becoming.

A good deed, given to someone in need, is the greatest gift you'll ever give.

The Bottom Line: You can offer those around you a priceless gift that all the money in the world can never buy - the gift of kindness.
