Power Up Passages

Never Mind.

January 14, 2004.

“It is easy to give advice from a port of safety.”
Johann Friedrich von Schiller

If there is one thing of which there is absolutely no shortage of in this world, it is advice given by others. Everywhere we turn and everywhere we go, we are inundated with a tidal wave of unsolicited advice from all sorts of people. Some of these individuals are well intentioned folks that would like to help us out. And then there are others who are doing little more than meddling and being nosy. In both instances these people are quick to tell us what we should be doing and how we should be doing it.

There will never be a shortage of people offering up advice like it’s going out of style, which of course it isn’t. Doesn’t it ever make you wonder that if their advice is so great, why aren’t they doing it themselves instead of dishing out their array of opinions and recommendations? The answer is simple: it’s always easier to give advice than actually do something yourself and that’s precisely why all advice must be taken lightly — if at all.

“The best advice I can give is to ignore advice. Life is too short to be distracted by the opinions of others.”
Russell Edson

Can there be anything easier than giving advice to someone else? After all, isn’t advice, particularly the uninvited variety, the only commodity on the market where the supply always exceeds the demand? Oh sure, we can definitely learn a great deal from our peers and there’s little doubt that experience has always been our greatest teacher. But sometimes the best advice for making your dreams come true is to ignore the so-called counsel of those sitting on the sidelines.

It is far better to listen to your own heart and follow your own path than to get distracted or knocked off course by the banter of those on the fringe. Finding a way — or making a way — is generally best achieved by those courageous pioneers who boldly blaze their own trails. These champions are too busy making things happen to pay attention to what others say or think about the decisions they make.

“I owe my success to having listened respectfully to the very best advice, and then going away and doing the exact opposite.”
G. K. Chesterton

Jack Adams said, “If it's free, it's advice; if you pay for it, it's counseling; if you can use either one, it's a miracle.” Nobody could have said it better. Once you realize that the best counsel you’ll ever receive will always come from within yourself, you will be well on your way to fashioning a lifetime of achievement.

It’s perfectly A-OK to listen to what others may tell you. Sometimes the suggestions made by those around you can prove to be true words of wisdom. But please remember this: sometimes the best advice is to run for cover when advice is directed your way.

“Create a vision and never let the environment, other people's beliefs, or the limits of what has been done in the past shape your decisions. Ignore conventional wisdom.”
Anthony Robbins

When it comes to taking advice, you need to first and foremost be true to yourself. Any advice that leads you away from the pursuit of your dreams must be summarily discarded as quickly as it was received. True happiness in life, the kind of personal contentment and fulfillment that only comes from making your dreams come alive, can only be attained when you are doing what you love to do, the things that you were born to do.

You must never allow anyone or anything an opportunity to steal your thunder. By following your own instincts and intuition, backed by ‘sound’ advice that fits neatly within your own game plan, you can bring back the excitement, energy and enthusiasm that have been missing in your life. You and you alone hold the key that can unlock your potential and let loose that part of you that desperately needs to get out and go.

You need to turn that key right now, regardless of what anyone says or thinks, and bring out that magic that lives inside of you.

The Bottom Line: When you stop worrying about what other people say, you can start living life on your terms for a change.
