“The difference between try and triumph is just a little ‘umph’!
Marvin Phillips

When I conducted seminars around the country a few years back, I would occasionally single out a couple of individuals in attendance and ask them to do me a favor. I would place a pencil on the table in front of them and ask, “Could you please try to pick up this pencil for me?” Time after time, the attendees were more than willing to oblige and pick up the pencil.

I would then ask them the same question again and invariably they would pick up the pencil a second time. Finally I would then ask, with heavy emphasis on the ‘try’ part of the request, “I want you to ‘TRY’ to pick up the pencil.” By the third time around, almost every one of them had gotten the message. Like the two previous efforts, they would reach for the pencil; but unlike before, they would not pick it up. They tried, but didn’t do it.

“It is impossible to win the race unless you venture to run; impossible to win the victory unless you dare to battle.”
Richard M. DeVos

When you think about it, life is very much like trying to pick up that pencil. Either you try — or you do it. You either give it a whirl or you give it everything you’ve got. Unfortunately, way too many of us are guilty of too much trying and too little doing. And the reason there is more trying than doing going on is pretty simple when you think about it. Trying allows us to leave the back door open — just in case we fail or fall short.

Without a doubt, there is a whale of a difference between trying something and actually getting it done. In the exercise above, when the attendees successfully picked up the pencil following my first two requests, they weren’t trying, were they? No, they were doing since they managed to pick it up both times. But on the third attempt, when they only ‘tried’ to pick up the pencil, they failed to actually get anything done.

“The ultimate victory in competition is derived from the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your best and that you have gotten the most out of what you had to give.”
Howard Cosell

When you give something a try, you never really throw your entire heart and soul into the effort, do you? Oh sure, you may con yourself into thinking you’re really giving it all you’ve got, but deep down you know that is simply not the case. Almost instinctively, many of us fail to give a full fledged effort; reasoning that since we didn’t commit to whatever it is we’re doing, it won’t really matter if we don’t finish the job. Who do we think we are kidding here?

If something is worth doing, isn’t it worth doing right? You bet it is! And if an undertaking is worth pursuing, why would you ever even consider giving it less than your very best? When you finally stop trying and start doing instead, you’re going to be flat out amazed at how much you can accomplish in your life.

“History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed. They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats.”
B. C. Forbes

When you lay it all on the line, with absolutely nothing held back or left in reserve, you set in place the necessary groundwork for your ultimate success. By boldly burning your bridges behind you and completely committing yourself to the task at hand, you begin creating a super charged momentum that cannot be stopped or even slowed down.

Can this type of all consuming commitment be a bit scary at times? Sure it can; but then again, so what? The alternative, which of course is doing nothing and accomplishing even less, isn’t going to get you anywhere you really want to go either, is it?

“Always seek out the seed of triumph in every adversity.”
Og Mandino

Like it or not, life can never be without risk. Playing it safe while giving something a whirl may seem like a no lose proposition at first blush, yet nothing could be further from the truth. Taking few if any risks is in reality the biggest risk any of us can ever assume. Why? Because we can never really show ourselves and those around us what we can do if we insist on holding something back. Try or triumph, it’s left up to each of us to make that call. So what’s it going to be?

How will you ever know how high you can fly if you never push yourself right to your limits… and beyond? How can you ever make your dreams come true if you never have the courage to go for the gold with every ounce of energy and excitement you can muster? And why just try when you can triumph instead?

The Bottom Line: Don’t just try it — JUST DO IT instead.
