“It may sound strange, but many champions are made champions by setbacks.”
Bob Richards

Why is it that our lives, which can at times be teeming with happiness and fulfillment that make life so special and worthwhile, can also be filled with numbing disappointment and distress that leave us feeling dispirited and depressed? With so many wonderful things and memorable moments that life can offer each of us, why must we often deal with crushing setbacks and devastating difficulties that literally knock us to our knees? Why, why, why?

While it may not seem fair, life does indeed test our mettle and our commitment to excellence on occasion. And whether we like it or not, some of us have to endure even more than our ‘fair’ share of tough times. And it is during these most troubling of times that we must look within ourselves to find all the courage, toughness and tenacity we’ll ever need to see us through life’s most challenging moments.

“Things don't go wrong and break your heart so you can become bitter and give up. They happen to break you down and build you up so you can be all that you were intended to be.”
Charles "Tremendous" Jones

There’s no doubt about it, suffering a crushing blow can strip your attitude right to the bare bone. Setbacks, particularly those troubling situations where heartache and heartbreak strike close to home, can leave you feeling resentful and cheated. You start questioning why it had to happen to you and before long, you can begin feeling tempted to throw in the towel and give up entirely if you’re not careful.

There's no question that life’s most devastating blows can systematically erode your faith, leaving you bitter and filled with anger. And suffering a demoralizing loss in your life can severely impact your ability to cope and hang in there until you can turn things around and get your life moving in a positive direction. But hang in there you must. As long as there is hope, there is a chance. And all you’ll ever need to make something positive happen is that one CHANCE.

“A difficult time can be more readily endured if we retain the conviction that our existence holds a purpose — a cause to pursue, a person to love, a goal to achieve.”
John Maxwell

One of the very best ways to overcome these feelings of negativity is to consciously redirect our focus and energies in the direction of those things that make our lives worthwhile — towards those activities and goals that make life so precious and meaningful. Whatever it is that makes us come alive with unbridled enthusiasm and excitement; that is precisely where we need to concentrate every ounce of our energy and focus.

Having something to strive for, somebody to give to and some worthy goal you long to accomplish can literally work wonders when the going gets tough. By looking ahead and not looking back, zeroing in on the things that bring out your very best, you can eventually pull yourself out of even the deepest of depths. By having something to live for, you'll find that it’s a lot easier to get through the obstacles and over the barriers standing in your way and put your life back together.

“Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.”
Napoleon Hill

Hey, let’s face it; tough times are a difficult pill to swallow to be sure. Real difficult. None of us, not one of us, ever enjoys one minute of being on the receiving end of life’s most difficult challenges. But like it or not, we’re going to have to overcome some imposing obstacles in our lifetimes. As a matter of fact, we’re going to be faced with the choice of giving up and giving in when things don’t go our way or in the alternative, take a stand and make our lives the truly outstanding adventures they deserve to be.

I think Robert Schuller summed it up best when he said, “Tough times never last, but TOUGH PEOPLE DO! Hard things are not put in our way to stop us, but rather to call out our courage and strength. And life’s most demanding times are not tossed in our path to block us from living life on our terms, but instead to forge the winner within.

Les Brown said, “Anytime you suffer a setback or disappointment, put your head down and plow ahead.” So the next time you’re whacked with a major setback, remember to keep on plowing — through thick and through thin. And while the plowing may become extremely difficult on occasion, never forget that you have more than enough to meet — and beat — every challenge posed. As long as you’re willing to keep on plowing, channeling every ounce of your strength into making your life everything you want it to be, your comeback from life's setbacks is in the bag.

The Bottom Line: Nothing can stop a person who refuses to be stopped.
