October 15, 2003.

“The true perfection of man lies not in what man has, but in what man is.”
Oscar Wilde

If you asked a hundred people what the word ‘perfection’ means to them, I’m sure you would get at least a hundred different answers. There are some people who see it as an ever elusive goal, a life long objective that challenges them to reach deep down and bring out their very best. Then there are others who see it as a total impossibility; a summit that can never be scaled, a shining star that can never be reached.

So who’s right — and who’s wrong? Is perfection a reachable goal, a standard we should strive to attain? Can we truly arrive at this heightened level of excellence? Or is the quest for perfection instead an impossible dream, little more than a worn out cliché? Again, it depends on whom you ask.

“Fix your eyes on perfection and you make almost everything speed towards it.”
William Ellery Channing

But one thing is for certain however. Every one of us have envisioned ourselves living the life we’ve longed to live on countless occasions, with all of our hopes and dreams exploding before us like the Fourth of July in living, breath taking color. Caught up in the exhilarating vision of life as it could be, with all of our limitations and barriers cast aside, we can vividly see ourselves having the time of our lives. As a matter of fact, it’s a picture perfect vision of a picture perfect life.

So if we can picture perfection in our minds and hold it deep inside our hearts, why shouldn’t we be able to achieve it in every day action? Well for starters, many would argue that obtaining perfection is impossible because none of us are perfect. Not even close. But contrary to popular belief, you CAN get close — and you’ll find that close is plenty good enough.

“Perfection consists not in doing extraordinary things, but in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.”
Angelique Arnauld

OK, so is there really ever a perfect time to make something super sensational occur in your life or for that matter, a perfect place to get started? Hey, that’s an easy one. The answers are yes and... yes. But the only way you’ll ever get to live out one of those special picture perfect days is to make the most of every magical moment you have been blessed with. And that means right here and right now.

By consistently striving to do everything you do as well as you can possibly do it, you begin to autograph your life with an indelible mark of excellence. And it is precisely this pursuit of excellence that can carry you to heights you’ve imagined but never really believed possible. At least up until now.

“Perfection is our goal, excellence will be tolerated.”
J. Yahl

Since you’ll always be able to find new and improved ways to utilize your immense God given talent, the pursuit of perfection will always be an ever revolving door of opportunity. With each day offering up more and more chances for you to grow, prosper and get better, your quest to attain perfection will be never ending. And that’s certainly not bad; not bad at all.

Geoffrey F. Fisher said that, “When you aim for perfection, you discover it's a moving target.” Isn’t it the truth? After all, your conception of perfection is a moving target that constantly changes as you change yourself.

Think about it for a moment. How many times have you reached a goal that once seemed completely out of reach? But once you had achieved that particular objective, hadn’t you already begun to set even bigger and bolder goals in its place? Of course you had. Why? Because along the way, in your quest to do your best, your best had gotten a good deal better. And that’s what living a life committed to excellence is all about. When you begin making each day better than the day before, your life will continue to get better and better. And to make this sweetheart of a deal even sweeter, there is never any limit on how much better it can get.

By following up one super duper day with an even more outstanding one, you'll soon discover that enjoying this type of energized, exciting, high octane lifestyle is more than close enough to perfect for you.

The Bottom Line: Getting close to perfection is plenty close enough for you to live your dreams.
