“It is always your NEXT move.”
Napoleon Hill

If you’ve ever been to the post office, bank or the department of motor vehicles, chances are very good that you had to wait in line before your ‘turn’ came around. Maybe even a REALLY LONG line. And chances are even better that all that waiting and waiting and waiting some more wasn’t among the highlights of your day.

Is it any wonder that very few of us relish standing in any kind of line? After all, there you are, trapped in a seemingly endless sea of people, going only as fast as the line allows you to move. Creeping and poking along, going nowhere particularly fast, you idly fritter away your precious time, waiting for your opportunity to finally become the NEXT person in line.

“Few people have any NEXT, they live from hand to mouth without a plan, and are always at the end of their line.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

When you stop and think about it for a moment, the only person who ever really counts for anything at all is the NEXT person in the line. It’s not the person behind you or even the folks in line behind that individual that count for anything special. They are basically just a sea of faces lost in the crowd. Only the next person in line is the man or woman of the moment.

When you find yourself buried deep in a never-ending queue, it’s quite a relief to at long last reach the front of the line. The moment the person you came to see yells “NEXT and that next person is you, it is one of the sweetest sounds you’ll ever hear. With the waiting over and done with, it becomes your turn, your time and your place in the sun.

And then BOOM! — it is gone. All that waiting and waiting for a few fleeting seconds of notoriety. Doesn’t seem fair, does it?

“NEXT in importance to having a good aim is to recognize when to pull the trigger.”
Elmer G. Letterman

In many respects life sometimes resembles the longest of long lines. We humbly take our place way back in the pack and then patiently wait for our turn, aimlessly passing the time until our number is pulled. But this is where any similarities with a line in the post office or the like come to a screeching halt.

Unlike the waiting you do down at the post office, there are no assurances that you will be rewarded for all of your waiting in the game of life. As a matter of fact, you will in all likelihood fall farther behind in line if you just stand around waiting for your lucky break to occur. When you wait for things to happen, you never know when, or for that matter, if your time will come. Instead of waiting or hesitating, you need to go for it — and go for it now.

“Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do NEXT. Spend your energies on moving forward toward finding the answer.”
Denis Waitley

When it comes to realizing your dreams, you’ve got to stop waiting and have the gumption to boldly stride to the front of the line. Rather than hoping you will get lucky, wouldn’t you prefer to charge ahead by taking charge? Are you going make some mistakes along the way? You bet you will, and some are sure to be real whoppers. But so what? After all, how are you going to get better if you don’t give it your best shot every day?

Les Brown gave us some sage advice when he said, “You must think of failure and defeat as the springboards to new achievements or to the NEXT level of accomplishment.” Why risk getting lost in the shuffle or stuck somewhere way back in the line when you can get your life moving in the right direction instead?

The only way to get where you want to go is to do the next thing… and then the next thing after that. When you have the courage to take that first step and then the next, you’ll soon get where you’ve always dreamed of going.

Who’s next? You, that’s who.

The Bottom Line: Don't wait until next week, next month or next year to make your dreams come true. Make them come alive today.
