July 31, 2003.

“Always plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark.”
Richard C. Cushing

How many times have we heard the familiar refrain, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail?” More than a few times, that’s for sure. So why is it that so few of us have a plan for our lives — a concise plan that not only outlines where we want to go, but also includes a road map on how we’re going to get there as well?

Most of us devote more time to planning our weekends and our vacations than we do to planning the lives we live. And we generally put far more effort into this planning to boot! Come on, what’s wrong with that picture? Why do we often meticulously lay out our vacation plans months in advance while giving the most important aspect of our lives — the fulfillment of our dreams and aspirations —only a passing glance? Why indeed.

“All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.”
Earl Nightingale

When it comes to planning, we frequently fail to see the forest for the trees. We see our vacation time and even our weekends as something special, something decidedly different from our day to day grind. And because we view these special occasions in a different light, as a lot of fun and excitement in the making, we take a great deal of pleasure in planning these momentous moments.

On the other hand, we far too often see our day to day activities as the same old song and dance — second verse, same as the first. And since we usually feel that there’s nothing really special about another day on the job, we go through the motions just trying to get through the day. Rather than make the most of the moment, we drift off into a daydream and fantasize about the life we long to live, never once realizing that today could be the day that our dreams start coming true. What we really need is a road map, a game plan for winning.

“Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan.”
Tom Landry

While establishing goals and setting a timetable for their achievement can be a super start to something really big, it’s the sticking with the plan through thick and thin that separates the winners from the second place finishers. Not only do you have to set the goals you wish to achieve, you must combine an indefatigable ‘can do’ attitude with a dogged determination to see them through to completion. And that’s not always easy.

As a matter of fact, working your plan can sometimes be no walk on the beach. But nobody said getting to the top was easy, did they? It is one thing to fancy yourself living your dreams; quite another to get busy bringing them to life. By putting a game plan together and then executing the plan, without the thought of quitting or giving up ever allowed to enter your mind, you can literally move mountains. Norman Vincent Peale summed up it best when he said, “Plan your work for today and every day, then work your plan.” Working, really working, your game plan is the key to success.

“Reduce your plan to writing. The moment you complete this, you will have definitely given concrete form to the intangible desire.”
Napoleon Hill

No doubt about it, you need to assemble your game plan for living with all the passion and zeal you would put into planning a month long vacation trip, maybe even more. But even more importantly, you need to give POWER to the plan by writing it down. That’s right; you need to put your plan in writing, spelling it out in exacting detail.

By capturing all of the excitement and energy you feel when you imagine yourself living the life of your dreams on paper; you can then convert this energy into action that can bring these dreams to life.

One last thing before we go. Please don’t wait around for the so-called perfect plan to come along before you get busy making good things happen in your life. As George S. Patton said, “A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow.” Get with the game plan and get going today. Use the plan at hand and perfect it as you go. You’ll discover that once you put your plan into action, your life will start going according to plan.

The Bottom Line: Plan on having a day you’ll always remember today — and then have it.
