The Gift That Keeps On Giving.

What is a lifetime of living your dreams worth to you?

July 25, 2003.

“Yesterday's the past and tomorrow's the future. Today is a gift — which is why they call it the present.
Bill Keane

We sometimes fail to recognize the greatest gift any of us could ever receive. And what gift is that we may ask? It is that amazing gift unfolding right before our eyes called today. While our yesterdays have no doubt provided us some of our fondest memories and our future holds the promise of many more memorable moments, today is the only day that really matters at all.

We often spend way too much of our time reliving the glory of days gone by, daydreaming and reminiscing about all of the fun we’ve had in the past. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with looking back and revisiting all the joyful and happy times we enjoyed long ago. Going back in time is fine, as long as you don’t stay there.

“Yesterday is but today's memory, and tomorrow is today's dream.”
Kahlil Gibran

Sometimes we feel happy when we think about the good times and good friends that made life so very special way back when. And we occasionally feel remorse and regret over the things we wished we would have done or opportunities that somehow slipped away. We need to forget about any of our past mistakes since they’re just a part of life. We simply need to learn from the past and apply those lessons learned today.

Then, on other occasions, we catch ourselves fantasizing about the future. There, with the noise of the outside world turned down for a few moments, our imaginations run completely free — set ablaze with electrically charged energy and passion. We think about the things we can accomplish, we imagine what we can make of our lives, and we feel absolutely terrific.

“Nothing is worth more than this day. You cannot relive yesterday. Tomorrow is still beyond your reach.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

While looking forward can provide the motivation for getting us going right here and right now, it can also lull us to sleep if we’re not careful. Instead of doing what needs to be done, we can find ourselves hopelessly lost in the bliss of a delightful daydream—literally mesmerized into a trance like state.

And while there is certainly nothing wrong with dreaming about a fantastic future, at some point you do have to get busy to bring this dream to life. Our dreams provide a sensory rich blueprint of where we want to go and how we can get there — a custom tailored blueprint for your life. And just like a blueprint for a beautiful home, the house will remain only a drawing on a piece of paper until someone breaks out the tools and gets to work.

“Today's accomplishments were yesterday's impossibilities.”
Robert H. Schuller

Fashioning a lifetime of achievement begins with taking those things we have gleaned from the past and mixing them with those dreams we hold deep down in our hearts and souls. And what better day could there be to begin living the life you’ve dreamed about than TODAY.

Today is always the one day which you can control from start to finish. That’s right, today is your opportunity to set yourself free and start setting the world on fire. There is no telling how much you can accomplish when you start spending your precious time in the present, making the most of today — day after day.

Spending time reflecting about the past or whiling away the hours dreaming about the future can provide us a roadmap to success, but if we're ever going to make our mark, we must take this present we are graciously granted daily and begin living every single day with all of the excitement and enthusiasm we can muster. Want a gift that keeps on giving? Then start making the most of your day today!

The Bottom Line: When we start making the most of every moment, today will be one of those days we will never forget.
