He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.
If there is one thing people from all walks of life have become increasingly proficient at doing, it is in the far flung field of making excuses. Rather than just do whatever it is that needs to be done, far too many of us are far too busy coming up with all sorts of reasons why we didnt do this or didnt try that.
In a nutshell, weve become excuse making factories; billowing and belching out excuses at a breath taking pace. While letting fly with one excuse after another may take the heat off of us for a minute or two, the sad fact is the only people we really hurt with our nonstop barrage of excuses are ourselves.
We are all manufacturers. Making good, making trouble or making excuses.
H. V. Adolt
With many now viewing personal responsibility and accountability as stuffy, antiquated relics of a bygone era, more and more people are finding more and more reasons for not doing those things they need to do. Instead of the buck stopping here, it lands virtually everywhere but our own backyard. After all, it is always, always, ALWAYS someone else's fault.
The erosion of personal responsibility shouldnt really come as a surprise to any of us. After all, conjuring up a potpourri of never ending excuses has become almost second nature these days. In fact, at any given time and any given place, there are more excuses flying around than Frisbees in the park on Sunday afternoon.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but they make a good excuse.
You need to be honest with yourself for a moment. Can you ever reach your full potential by casually excusing each and every mistake, misstep or goof up you make? Hey, we need to face the facts here. The best of the best do not excuse their way to the top. If you truly want to make your dreams come true, you need to park your excuses by the curb and get busy doing whatever you need to do.
Like it or not, all of us make mistakes. In fact, we make a lot of them. But the real winners dont cry over spilled milk; moaning, whining and making excuses. Even after the most devastating of defeats, these champions pick themselves off the canvas and find a way to get better than ever before.
Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects of you, never excuse yourself.
Henry Ward Beecher
In order to get the most out of what youve been given, youve got to get out of the excuse making mode. Even when those around you offer up one excuse after another, tossing aside any and all responsibility for virtually everything they do (or dont do), please make absolutely certain that you dont fall into the same trap.
By setting higher standards for yourself, you raise the bar for your personal achievement; while at the same time resisting the temptation to make excuses when things dont go your way. Napoleon Hill, the author of the fabulously successful book Think and Grow Rich, once said, The best job goes to the person who can get it done without passing the buck or coming back with excuses.
Here's a simple rule to follow about making excuses: DON'T!
The Bottom Line: When you stop making excuses, youll start making things happen.
