What is a lifetime of living your dreams worth to you?

May 24, 2003.

"It is not the mountains that we conquer, but ourselves."
Edmund Hillary

Have you ever worked with an unreliable individual? If you are like most of us, you have encountered a number of undependable people in your life. You know how down right frustrating it can be to count on someone, especially when the chips are down, only to find out that person has failed to do what he or she agreed to do or worse yet, is nowhere to be found.

These people are in a world of their own — or so it seems. They wonder why the rest of us think being dependable and trustworthy is such a big deal. After all, dependability isn't a big deal to them. These folks always appear to be looking for the lazy way out of everything. If they can find a way to scrape by doing just the bare minimum required, they seem happy and content.

"It is hard for an empty bag to stand upright."
Benjamin Franklin

If you have ever been left holding the bag due to someone's neglect, ineptness or sheer laziness, you know how absolutely maddening the experience can be. There you are, desperately needing the person you’re counting on to come through in the clutch, and you’re left holding the bag. An empty bag at that.

How did you feel about that person when you were left in the lurch? Were you hurt, upset or perhaps even angry? What did you think about that individual’s integrity, honor and commitment to excellence when he or she failed to deliver? In all likelihood, that person dropped a notch or two in your eyes.

"You can preach a better sermon with your life than with your lips."
Oliver Goldsmith

So how do you suppose others feel about you when you fail to live up to your commitments? You probably don’t want to know, do you? Want to hazard a guess at how people look at your integrity when you drop the ball or let them down, especially when they are counting on you? You probably don’t want to go there either, do you?

Are you beginning to see why it is so crucial to be someone that others can always count on to hold up your end of the bargain? While no one would ever intentionally stand in the way of their own personal growth and development, it may surprise you that the #1 reason people fail to reach their full potential is they do indeed stop themselves.

"Of all the properties which belong to honorable men, not one is so highly prized as that of character."
Henry Clay

A winner accepts the fact that only one person can decide whether he or she chooses to become a real player in the game of life — or sadly just a pretender. A winner acknowledges the reality that only one person can accept personal responsibility for his or her thoughts, words and deeds. A winner firmly believes that only one person is capable of demanding the absolute best he or she has to offer. And in your case, who is this one person? It’s YOU — that's who!

You are the one person in charge of where you are going and how you are going to get there. A winner is a real "player" who goes all out and plays to win, while a pretender merely goes through the motions and tries not to lose.

"The first and best victory is to conquer self."

If you truly wish to be counted as one of the very best, you have to be someone others can count on in the crunch. Not every once in a while or every now and then — but each and every time out. You must decide whether you are going to be a real player who makes good things happen or only a pretender who tries to fake it. Come on, it’s time to get your rear in gear, get out on the playing field and start holding up your end of the bargain. People are counting on you. It's time to play to win!

The Bottom Line: When it counts and where it counts, make sure your actions count.
