In our never ending quest to have it all — and have it as soon as possible — we sometimes forget that the majority of our most outstanding accomplishments rarely appear out of the blue. My oh my, don’t we wish that was the case? Like it or not, our finest achievements are generally a result of a number of little things coming together.

Success occurs when we do a little over here and then add a little over there. And then we keep doing a little more and a little more. Before we know it, all of the little things add up to a lot. By consistently doing what needs to be done, when we need to do it, we pave our path to unparalleled success. But it’s that little ‘doing’ each and every day that sometimes causes us our biggest problem.

How many times have we tossed in the towel because the obstacles in our paths appear to be just too overwhelming? And how many times have we given up on our goals and aspirations because it seemed like there was no chance to make them true? Rather than keep the faith and keep on plugging, we run up the white flag and go home. Why?

The main reason so many people fail to set and achieve the really BIG goals of life is just that — the goals are really BIG. Hey, don’t get me wrong here, there’s nothing wrong with BIG goals. As a matter of fact, BIG goals are the only kind of goals that can fire you up, stir your soul and make you come alive. But you must be able to break your BIG goals into bite size pieces.

Let’s face it, when you’re standing at the bottom of the mountain and peering skyward at the mammoth task ahead, you can become paralyzed by the enormity of the mountain itself. The mountain is too steep you tell yourself, the summit’s too high. Rather than focusing on the first few steps needed to start your ascent of the mountain, you stand frozen — afraid to move. But move you must if you’re going to get to the top.

Whenever life’s challenges appear too great and you’re tempted to quit, you simply need to do a little — and then do a little more. Instead of giving in or giving up, why not give a little — and then give a little bit more? Rather than trying to scale the mountain in one single bound, take a little step — and then take another. When you break down the mountain one step at a time, the mountain will soon like a mole hill.

Christopher Morley said that “big shots are only little shots who keep shooting.” That’s the key — to take your best shot and then keep on shooting.

Before you know it, you’ll be a big shot too.

The Bottom Line: When you add a little to a little, and you do it a lot, you’re going to accomplish some really BIG things.
