Power Up Passages

Turning Work Into Play.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

April 23, 2003.

"Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing."
Theodore Roosevelt

To some folks, work is just another four letter word. These individuals dislike what they do for a living and can hardly wait for the work day to be completed. At quitting time, when they finally get to leave their work behind, it’s as if they’ve been let out of jail and set free. They love Friday afternoons and hate Monday mornings. But one thing is for certain - they don’t like their work.

Then there are the other people who absolutely love their work. To their way of thinking, work is the most beautiful word on earth. They love what they do for a living. In fact, they live for it. These people love their work so much that they actually hate to stop doing it.

How in the world can this one word have such a totally different meaning and evoke such varying degrees of emotion to these two sets of people?

"Work and play are words used to describe the same thing under differing conditions."
Mark Twain

The answer is easy yet difficult at the same time. The reason people love their work is because they have found that their special niche — their true calling — in life. To them, their work time is their play time. They have discovered that special something they are good at doing and love to do and have fashioned a lifetime of achievement around it. And because they love their work so much, they do it very well and generally get paid well to do it. In a nutshell, their careers flourish because they absolutely love what they’re doing.

The other group of workers, those who detest their work, feel this way because they are not doing what they love to do. They work, but for all the wrong reasons. They work to pay the bills, to put food on the table or to make ends meet. But not because they love their work — and that’s the problem.

"Whenever it is in any way possible, every boy and girl should choose as his life work some occupation which he should like to do anyhow, even if he did not need the money."
William Lyon Phelps

Look, there’s no doubt that being able to meet your obligations is important. No question about it. But many in this 'hate my job' group never realize that they could earn just as much, probably even more if they only had the courage to follow their heart. And they would be infinitely more happy as well.

"When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece."
John Ruskin

John Dewey said, "To find out what one is fitted to do, and to secure an opportunity to do it, is the key to happiness." And happiness is living a rich and rewarding life. By boldly chasing your dreams, you too can live the life that you love and love the life that you live.

When you begin passionately pursuing that special something you love, with all of the energy, excitement and enthusiasm you can muster, you’ll find a way to convert your passion into your profession.

Once you have successfully fashioned your life adventure around your true purpose, you will discover the joy of work. And best of all, you'll get paid handsomely as well.

The Bottom Line: When you’re doing what you love to do, your work days become your play days.
