Power Up Passages

Failing Forward.
March 22, 2003.

Oh how tempting it is to throw up your hands and give in when things don’t go your way. You know how the story goes. You give something a shot – maybe even a really good shot – and you end up falling flat on your face in the attempt. There you sit, frustrated, disappointed and humiliated, wondering if it’s really worth the effort after all. Feelings of self doubt and hopelessness begin to creep in and you are sorely tempted to give up and call it quits. We’ve all been there, done that a thousands times – or more.

"We are all failures – at least, all the best of us are."
J. M. Barrie

There’s no doubt about it, failing or falling short in your quest to do your best hurts. In fact, sometimes it hurts a lot. Nobody likes to lay it all on the line only to fall short of their goal. Failure hurts our feelings, hurts our sense of self worth and most of all, it hurts our pride.

It is in these moments of defeat and desperation, when all seems lost and hope is in very short supply, that you need to hold tight to this truth: failure is never fatal or final. Now failure will make you think it is, especially when it has knocked you down good and hard. But in these make or break moments that shape your life, you must circle the wagons and prepare yourself – mentally, physically and emotionally – to fire away once more.

"Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
Samuel Beckett

The best of the very best will quickly tell you that they literally failed their way to success. That’s right, the most successful people on earth are also life’s biggest failures as well. They simply viewed their failures as nothing more than ‘practice shots’ and then just kept on shooting until their aim and their results improved.

"The line between failure and success is so fine that we scarcely know when we pass it: so fine that we are often on the line and do not know it."
Elbert Hubbard

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope." Hope is the best thing about life. As long as you maintain hope, a deep seated belief in yourself and your God given abilities, you will ultimately make it to the top. Whenever you get knocked down, remember it’s nothing more than just a missed practice shot. Simply learn from your mistakes, improve your aim – and fire again and again and again.

"One fails forward toward success."
Charles Kettering

How will you ever know for certain that your next shot is the one that turns your life around and opens the floodgate to your success – unless you take it? Far too many people give up on life, opportunity and ultimately themselves when all they really needed to do was take another shot or two.

"Failure doesn't mean that you're a failure ... it just means that you haven't succeeded yet."
Robert Schuler

You must vow to take your best shot every day. If you miss a shot or two (or three or four or more), what’s the big deal? Simply reload and fire again. If you miss the mark once more, don't worry about it. Just sharpen your aim and keep on letting it fly. Shoot, shoot and shoot some more. The true champions long ago learned that winning life’s battles is simply a matter of outlasting the losing. They learned that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take in life.

Warm up the old shooting arm and start shooting. And don't get all worried about missing on occasion. Your aim as well as your accuracy will quickly improve with every shot you take. Before you know it, you will have become a shooting star.

The Bottom Line: As long as you’re willing to give life your very best shot each and every day, your success is a slam dunk.
