Power Up Passages

Doing Some Home Improvement.
February 26, 2003.

While the relationships you develop and enjoy with people outside your own home are very important, the relationships you share with those special family members inside your home are far and away life’s most meaningful.

I'm sure you are familiar with old sayings such as family comes first, the home is where the heart is and home sweet home. These maxims conjure up pictures of a caring, sharing and loving family. Without question, we all share a common desire of having a nice place to call home.

If your home life is not as good as it should be or could perhaps use a little work, then maybe you should roll up your sleeves and get busy doing a little home improvement.

It's important to understand that this improvement process begins with you. You should want to become the best mom, dad, sister, brother, husband or wife that you can be. In order to get your home improvement project underway, why not take a moment and make a list of the things you can do around the house that will make it a better place for your family to live?

I'm not necessarily talking about mowing the grass or taking out the garbage, although those duties should never be neglected. No, I am talking about the things you can do to make your home a better place for each member of your family right now.

Everyone should get involved, with each and every family member collectively bringing more fun, happiness and excitement to your home. You should remember to stop, look and listen to everyone's suggestions and then put those ideas into action and see what happens.

A house filled with fun, abounding with happiness and bursting at the seams with excitement sounds like a great place to call home, doesn't it? You bet it does and it can be your home when you decide that is what you want.

You can set a strong example for your children by the things you say and do. It should come as no surprise that setting a strong example will generate far better results than simply setting the rules.

You should make certain that every family member is provided a valued role in the home, thereby giving everyone an equal chance to contribute. This open atmosphere will help develop a solid sense that everyone is part of the team, where together everyone achieves more.

Last but certainly not least; love, respect and responsibility must not only become household words, but should also become a household way of living as well.

The Bottom Line: A little home improvement here and there can make your house a nice place to call home.

Govern a family as you would cook a small fish – very gently.
Chinese Proverb

Your family and your love must be cultivated like a garden. Time, effort, and imagination must be summoned constantly to keep any relationship flourishing and growing.
Jim Rohn

The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works, is the family.
Lee Iacocca
