Occasionally we hear of people suffering from an affliction called double vision, where their vision is blurred to such an extent that they are literally seeing double. However, there is a different kind of double vision that winners consistently use to their best advantage. This double vision allows them to see both sides of any situation.
For example, a successful real estate agent will experience a dramatic increase in sales the moment he or she begins seeing the transaction from both the seller's and buyer's viewpoint. Regardless of whether the agent represents the buyer or the seller in the deal, no sale will take place until the needs of both parties have been addressed and satisfied.
If the agent represents the buyer, the agent still needs to see the seller's point of view. If the agent instead represents the seller, he or she must still be able to see the transaction through the buyer's eyes. By placing himself or herself in the other person's shoes, the agent can now see and literally feel the other person's needs. By seeing double, the agent is better positioned to accommodate the other person's needs and close the sale.
The same seeing double premise works in all sorts of relationships. Double vision will enhance and preserve any relationship, including the husband - wife relationship, the employee - employer relationship, the dad/mom - son/daughter and any other interpersonal relationships you may have in life.
Without question, the biggest reason relationships sour is the failure or refusal of one or both parties to see the other person's view point. When you are willing and able to see the other person's perspective and feel that person's feelings, you are now positioned to make the relationship better, not bitter. After all, relationships tend to grow when nurtured and remain when appreciated.
We encourage you to be open to both sides of the picture where you are willing to put yourself in the other person's place for a moment. When you do, you are in effect saying to this person that what he or she says and thinks is important to you. When you master the ability to listen, understand and see the other person's view point, you will find that the relationships you enjoy with others will begin growing stronger and getting better.
You should focus on getting really good at the give and take that is the foundation of all relationships. Giving, contrary to popular belief, is always an endless resource. In fact, you will discover that the more you give to others, the more you will have in reserve which can be given away again.
Please make absolutely certain that you dont take too much from any relationship or foolishly take others for granted. Why not start seeing both sides and get that double vision working for you?
