Power Up Passages

The Player Inside You Needs to Play!
February 19, 2003.

How do you go about elevating yourself from pretender to player status? Well, for starters, you need to get down from the bleachers and get out on the playing field. You will never be a part of the action until you get out on the playing field of life.

Then once you have ventured out on the playing field, don’t just stand there waiting for something to happen. Too many people tend to dabble at this or putter around with that in a futile attempt to play it safe. They try to convince themselves and others that they are playing but who are they really fooling? Nobody. Deep down they know they are not giving it their all, but only pretending instead.

Over time these people gradually lose touch with the winner inside them and eventually quit playing altogether. Before they know it, life has lost its richness, its excitement and its enjoyment. Rather than reawakening the winner inside them and challenging themselves to be their best, these pretenders are much more comfortable crawling back up in the bleachers where they feel safe and secure. Out of harm's way, they can watch as the life they could have lived passes them by.

Life was never designed to be a spectator sport. You will never accomplish much of anything sitting on your rump up in the cheap seats. Each of us should view our life as a great big playing field, where we are free to be our best every day. As children, we all loved the playground. We could run and jump and play to our heart's content. There is little doubt that children love to play – anytime, anyplace and anywhere. They absolutely do not want to sit on a bench in the park and watch others having a ball.

Sitting still is not part of a kid’s game plan. In fact, sitting still drives them bonkers (and eventually their parents too!). They want to get out there and play full steam ahead.

Can you remember how great it felt to romp, stomp, run and jump all over the playground? Do you ever wonder where in the heck that child-like spirit went?

Wouldn’t you dearly love to see life as a wide open playing field where all sorts of wonderful things can happen again? Life can have all of the magic – and more – when you rekindle that child-like spirit and learn how to play again, learn how to have fun again and learn how to love living once again.

All of us have a winner inside us that desperately needs to play everyday. Hey, life is not a drag, life is not unfair and life is not some crummy job that you are forced to go to every day. Life is and always will be a great big playing field that is open for action 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 52 weeks a year.

The player in you holds an open invitation to join the fun down on the playing field. Isn't it about time to let that player inside you play once again?

The Bottom Line: It’s time to play ball!

None are so old as those who have outlived enthusiasm.
Henry David Thoreau

Act enthusiastic and you become enthusiastic. Dale Carnegie

Life's blows cannot break a person whose spirit is warmed at the fire of enthusiasm.
Norman Vincent Peale
