Power Up Passages

Winners Don't Whine and Whiners Don't Win.
January 29, 2003.

Other than sharing a number of the same letters, winning and whining have very little in common. You rarely, if ever, see a winner whining about this or that. These power performers have already come to terms with a harsh reality of life – whining prevents you from winning. If there is one thing that defines the true achievers, it is their impassioned will to win. Anything that gets in the way of winning has no place in their life and whining gets in their way big time.

The real players in life know full well that you don’t have time to whine when you’re busy winning and you don’t have time to win when you’re busy whining. Griping, complaining, fussing and fuming won’t clear the path to the winner’s circle. As a matter of fact, whining siphons your energy, diverts your attention and squanders your focus. Don’t fool yourself into thinking, even for the briefest of moments, that you can do both. It’s not possible. And don’t con yourself into believing whining won’t adversely affect your progress. It will.

Winners prefer to minimize their contact with whiners. They simply have no time for the whiners’ never ending barrage of moaning and groaning about this and that and the other. Not surprisingly, whiners often resent winners, constantly complaining about the breaks those ‘lucky’ winners receive. For whiners, griping and complaining are the name of the game. Oh sure, whiners may feel pretty good on occasion and even let the winner inside themselves catch a fleeting glimpse of the good life, but sooner or later (usually much sooner) they encounter a setback and their whining comes roaring back in full force. To them, life is a big pain in the … neck.

On the other hand, winning is a way of life for the winners. They see life as an roaring roller coaster ride – an exciting challenge and a golden opportunity – all rolled up into one exhilarating adventure.

If you fail to remain vigilant, whining can become one of those nasty habits that gradually sneaks into your life and seeps into your soul. Then before you know you have the habit, it has you right where it wants you.

Don't cry, mope and complain about the hand you've been dealt in life. Take what you've been given and play it for all it's worth. Life is not about holding a good hand; life is about playing a poor hand well. When you stop whining, you’ll start winning – and you’ll start winning a lot.

The Bottom Line: Always remember that all out commitment to excellence in everything you say, think and do paves the path to greatness.

Desire is the key to motivation, but it's the determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek.
Mario Andretti

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.
Theodore Roosevelt

Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.
William James
